Title 16 › Chapter 27— NATIONAL TRAILS SYSTEM › § 1250
The Secretary of the Interior, the Secretary of Agriculture, and heads of federal land agencies can encourage volunteers and volunteer groups to help plan, build, maintain, and manage trails across the country. They are also encouraged to use existing authorities, including section 102301 of title 54, the Volunteers in the Forests Act of 1972, and section 200305 of title 54 (about Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans). Those officials may help volunteers by giving advice, organizing and supervising projects, and providing training or trail-related research. They may also make federal buildings, equipment, tools, and technical help available to volunteers, but they can set whatever limits or rules they think are needed.
