Title 16 › Chapter 51— ALASKA NATIONAL INTEREST LANDS CONSERVATION › Subchapter II— SUBSISTENCE MANAGEMENT AND USE › § 3126
National parks and monuments in Alaska are closed to taking wildlife except for subsistence uses that this law allows. The Secretary may allow subsistence hunting, gathering, and sport fishing, and those activities must follow this law and other U.S. and Alaska rules. The Secretary can also set places or seasons when no taking is allowed for public safety, management, or to protect a species. After talking with the State, giving notice, and holding a public hearing, the Secretary may temporarily close public lands to subsistence uses for those reasons. In an emergency, the Secretary may close lands right away, must publish the reasons, and the emergency closure cannot last more than 60 days unless extended after notice and a public hearing.
