Title 16 › Chapter 62A— ASIAN ELEPHANT CONSERVATION › § 4261
Asian elephant numbers in the wild have fallen so much that their long-term survival is in serious danger. They are listed as endangered under section 1533 and on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). So far, money and efforts have not been enough to stop habitat loss and shrinking populations. Asian elephants help protect the tropical forests they live in and benefit many other species. They face threats like habitat loss and fragmentation, conflicts with people, poaching for ivory and other parts, and capture for domestication. Reducing these threats will need shared action by the countries where they live, the United States and other nations, and private groups.
