§450jj–6 Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Commission

Summary

Creates the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Commission with 20 members. The members include local and state officials (like the St. Louis County executive, the St. Clair County board chair, the mayors of East St. Louis and Saint Louis, and the Governors of Illinois and Missouri), two representatives from the Bi‑State Development Agency, several federal officials (the Secretaries of the Interior, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, the Treasury, Commerce, and the Secretary of the Smithsonian), plus six private people chosen by the Secretary of the Interior from lists sent by the mayors and governors of East St. Louis/Illinois and Saint Louis/Missouri. Those six appointees must have experience in fields such as parks, environment, historic preservation, culture, tourism, economic development, city planning, finance, or public administration. Most members serve three‑year terms, but the first three appointees from each State are staggered so two serve one year, two serve two years, and two serve three years as the Secretary of the Interior decides. Vacancies are filled the same way as the original appointment. Members get no salary but may be paid travel costs and per diem like intermittent government workers under section 5703 of title 5. The Commission elects its own chair. Federal agencies represented on the Commission can lend staff or services if asked. The Commission can accept gifts, money, property, or services for its work. It ends on the day ten years after August 24, 1984, but the Secretary of the Interior may extend it up to five more years if the Commission says that is needed to finish its duties under sections 450jj to 450jj–9.
