Title 16 › CHAPTER 1 — NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › SUBCHAPTER CXXV — STEENS MOUNTAIN COOPERATIVE MANAGEMENT AND PROTECTION AREA › Part A — Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Area › subpart 2 — management of federal lands › § 460nnn–21
The Secretary must manage the federal lands in the Cooperative Management and Protection Area under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act and other laws. The management must protect and improve the area's natural, cultural, social, and economic resources — such as geology, plants and animals, waterways, scenic areas, tribal cultural and archaeological sites, and other historic places — and must allow current and historic recreational uses. Within 4 years after October 30, 2000, the Secretary must make a long-range plan for those federal lands, including the Wilderness Area. The plan must say how the lands should be used and managed, use existing plans and studies as appropriate, work with the State, county, local landowners, and the Burns Paiute Tribe, and set measurable, achievable management goals consistent with section 460nnn–12. The Secretary must also run a monitoring program to track progress toward those goals.
