Title 16 › Chapter 2— NATIONAL FORESTS › Subchapter I— ESTABLISHMENT AND ADMINISTRATION › § 539i
Creates the Fossil Ridge Recreation Management Area of about 43,900 acres in the Gunnison National Forest (shown as “Area A” on a January 1993 map) to protect scenic, wildlife, recreation, and other natural values. The Secretary of Agriculture must manage the area under the laws for the National Forest System and withdraw the lands from public land claims, mining claims, and mineral or geothermal leasing, except for valid existing rights. No new developed campgrounds may be built, and after August 13, 1993 no new roads or trails may be made. Timber cutting is only allowed as in wilderness for fire, insects, disease control, or public safety. Grazing continues as before. Motorized use is allowed only on routes and trails that existed and allowed motorized travel on July 1, 1991, except for official or emergency use; the Secretary must identify and publish a map of those routes within one year after August 13, 1993, and may close routes to protect resources or safety.
