Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 77— PEONAGE, SLAVERY, AND TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS › § 1597
It is illegal to knowingly destroy, hide, take, keep, or seize someone else’s real or fake passport or immigration papers. The rule applies if it happens while you’re committing the crimes in 18 U.S.C. 1351 or 8 U.S.C. 1324, if you mean to commit those crimes, or if you do it to unlawfully control, stop, or limit the person’s work or services. Anyone who breaks this can be fined, jailed for not more than 1 year, or both. Anyone who knowingly tries to block or interfere with enforcing this rule gets the same penalty.
