It is illegal to ask for or take money, gifts, or political donations in return for promising to support or use influence to get someone an appointed job with the U.S. government, or for referring a name or charging a fee to help someone get federal employment. The punishment is a federal fine, up to one year in jail, or both. Employment agencies working under a written request from a federal department or agency are exempt.
