Title 18 › PART I — CRIMES › CHAPTER 33 — EMBLEMS, INSIGNIA, AND NAMES › § 706
It is illegal for anyone to wear or show the Red Cross sign, or a sign that looks like it, to trick people into thinking they are part of or working for the American National Red Cross. Also, no one except the American National Red Cross, its authorized workers and agents, and the sanitary and hospital authorities of the U.S. armed forces may use the red cross symbol on a white background or the words "Red Cross" or "Geneva Cross" (or any combination that looks like them). If you break this rule you can be fined under federal law, jailed for up to six months, or both. Uses that were legal when the law was passed remain allowed.
