Title 18 › Part I— CRIMES › Chapter 41— EXTORTION AND THREATS › § 879
It is a federal crime to, on purpose, threaten to kill, kidnap, or seriously hurt certain protected people. That includes former Presidents and their immediate family; the immediate family of the President, President‑elect, Vice President, or Vice President‑elect; major candidates for President or Vice President and their immediate family; and anyone the Secret Service protects. "Immediate family" for a former President means the spouse while the former President is alive, a surviving spouse until death or remarriage, and children under 16. For the President, Vice President, elects, and major candidates it means close relatives by blood, marriage, or adoption, or people who act as a parent. "Major candidate" and the "elect" terms are defined in other federal laws.
