Each Member, Delegate, and Resident Commissioner in the House may hire one extra employee for two months each year called a Lyndon Baines Johnson congressional intern. The office can pay up to $1,000 total for that intern, at no more than $500 per month, from House accounts. This intern is in addition to other staff and allowances. The intern must be either a student or a teacher and must have a certificate on file with the Chief Administrative Officer while employed. Student: was a bona fide college or similar higher-education student in the academic year before the internship. Teacher: was a bona fide government or social-studies teacher at a secondary or postsecondary school in the year before the internship. The Committee on House Oversight must create rules to carry out these rules.
