Title 20 › CHAPTER 28 — HIGHER EDUCATION RESOURCES AND STUDENT ASSISTANCE › SUBCHAPTER IV — STUDENT ASSISTANCE › Part C — Federal Work-Study Programs › § 1087–57
Colleges and other schools can use up to 10% of the money they get under section 1096(a) tied to this program to run community service-learning. They can spend that money to keep the learning part high quality, make sure students have the resources, training, and supervision they need, and work with public and nonprofit groups (including programs under the National and Community Service Act of 1990) to plan and run the work. The Secretary may also give extra grants to these schools to support off-campus community service jobs, on top of other funds. Schools must use those grants to recruit and pay students, including pay for training time and travel directly related to the service. Priority goes to projects helping early childhood education and emergency or disaster preparedness. Money was authorized as needed for fiscal year 2009 and the five years after.
