The Secretary may carry out or fund research and studies to help improve foreign language, area, and international education. The work can include 12 types of activities, such as surveys of needs and job demand, tracking how graduates are used, checking whether supported programs would exist without help, comparing teaching strategies, finding better ways to teach languages and international subjects, creating specialist materials, studying technology and testing, sharing best practices and diverse viewpoints, collecting and analyzing data, and making that data easy for the public to use. Each year the Secretary must prepare, publish, and announce a report that lists the books and research materials created with this support.
