Title 20 › Chapter 49— ASBESTOS SCHOOL HAZARD DETECTION AND CONTROL › § 3607
If a person or group gets a grant under section 3604 or a loan under section 3605, they must let the United States sue anyone the Attorney General finds responsible for the costs of the work paid for by those grants or loans. Money won in those suits must be used to repay the United States up to the amount of the grant, the unpaid loan balance, and interest equal to what a commercial lender would have charged at prevailing rates (as set by the Secretary). The Attorney General must investigate whether the United States should try to recover money spent under this chapter and must send a report with findings and any recommendations to Congress within one year after June 14, 1980. If the Attorney General decides to seek recovery, they must move quickly to collect the amounts.
