Title 20 › Chapter 59— BARRY GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP AND EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION PROGRAM › § 4704
Awards scholarships, fellowships, and research internships to eligible people who study natural science, engineering, and math. Scholarships go to outstanding undergraduates who plan careers in those fields and are given priority to students at community colleges and the minority-serving schools listed in section 1067q(a). Fellowships go to outstanding graduate students seeking advanced degrees. Research internships go to outstanding undergraduates, also prioritized for community colleges and the same minority-serving schools. The Foundation can run a nationwide competition to choose recipients. People who get scholarships or fellowships are called Barry Goldwater Scholars. People who get research internships are called Barry Goldwater Interns. The Foundation can also give honoraria to outstanding secondary-school teachers and volunteers who improve math and science teaching. When practical, the Board should give honoraria each year to two people chosen at large from each State, one person from each county in each State, people at schools on military reservations, and people in the dependent overseas school system. The Board sets the honoraria amounts.
