§5962 Safe Schools Program Authorized

Summary

The Secretary must award competitive grants to qualifying local school districts so they can run projects that help make schools safe and free from violence and meet Goal Six of the National Education Goals. Each grant can last no more than two fiscal years and can be up to $3,000,000. When possible, grants should go to both rural and urban districts. Congress approved $50,000,000 for fiscal year 1994 for this program. Each year the Secretary may keep up to 10% of that money for national activities, and half of the kept amount must be available that year for a specific program described elsewhere.
