Title 20 › Chapter 70— STRENGTHENING AND IMPROVEMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS › Subchapter IV— 21ST CENTURY SCHOOLS › Part A— Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants › Subpart 1— student support and academic enrichment grants › § 7117
If allowed under section 7116(f), school districts or groups of districts that get money under section 7115(a) must spend some of those funds on programs that help students get a well-rounded education. These programs must be coordinated with other schools and community services and can be run with colleges, businesses, nonprofits, community groups, or other partners that have a proven record. Examples include college and career counseling (like college and career awareness, training counselors to use job-market data, and financial aid help), music and arts to boost engagement and problem solving, STEM programs (including increasing access for underrepresented students, hands-on learning, competitions for low-income students, STEM schools, and mixing arts with STEM), accelerated learning options (such as covering exam fees or expanding AP/dual enrollment/early college), and other programs like history and civics, foreign languages, environmental education, volunteerism, and other activities that broaden students’ learning. For fiscal year 2017, districts that get a subgrant under this part may use the money to pay part or all of accelerated learning exam fees for low-income students who took those exams in the 2016–2017 school year, as described above.
