§80q–14 Definitions

Defines key words used in the subchapter. Board of Regents means the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents; Board of Trustees means the Board of Trustees of the National Museum of the American Indian; burial site means a natural or prepared place where individual human remains are placed as part of a cultural death rite, whether under, on, or above the ground; funerary object means an item intentionally placed with human remains during or after burial; Heye Foundation assets means the Heye Foundation’s collections, endowment, and other property described in the Memorandum of Understanding with the Smithsonian dated May 8, 1989, excluding the Heye Foundation’s interest in Audubon Terrace; Heye Museum means the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation; Indian means a member of an Indian tribe; Indian tribe has the meaning given in section 5304 of title 25; National Museum means the National Museum of the American Indian established by section 80q–1; Native American means a person of a tribe, people, or culture native to the Americas and includes Native Hawaiians; Native Hawaiian means a member or descendant of the original people who, before 1778, lived in and exercised sovereignty in the area now comprising the State of Hawaii.
