§80q–14 Definitions

Summary

These rules give special meanings to certain words used in this part. The Board of Regents is the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents. The Board of Trustees is the governing board of the National Museum of the American Indian. A burial site is any natural or prepared place, above, on, or below the ground, where a culture puts individual human remains as part of death rites. A funerary object is an item intentionally placed with individual human remains at burial or later as part of a death rite. Heye Foundation assets are the collections, endowment, and other property of the Heye Foundation described in a May 8, 1989 memorandum of understanding, except the foundation’s interest in Audubon Terrace. The Heye Museum is the Museum of the American Indian of the Heye Foundation. Indian means a member of an Indian tribe. Indian tribe has the meaning given in federal law. National Museum means the National Museum of the American Indian created by law. Native American means a person of a tribe, people, or culture indigenous to the Americas and includes Native Hawaiians. Native Hawaiian means a member or descendant of the aboriginal people who, before 1778, lived in and governed the area now called the State of Hawaii.
