The National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance may carry out or support evaluations that match its mission. It can evaluate programs under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. With the Director’s approval, it can look over evaluations done by others to judge how good their evidence is. It must coordinate with other Department evaluation work, review and sometimes add to federal education evaluations (especially the Department’s), set evaluation methods, and help the Director prepare the law’s biennial report. Every evaluation the Center does must meet the highest scientific quality and be checked by rigorous peer review. The Evaluation and Regional Assistance Commissioner must run the operations and contracts for evaluations authorized under section 8601 of the ESEA that the Department was handling as of November 5, 2002.
