Raises the penalties for selling or trying to sell illegal drugs in, on, or within 1,000 feet of a truck stop or a safety rest area. safety rest area — a roadside place with parking for drivers to rest or meet other needs. truck stop — a place within 2,500 feet of the interstate or primary highway that can fuel or service commercial trucks and has parking. For a first offense, the law doubles the maximum prison time and doubles any supervised‑release period allowed under 21 U.S.C. 841(b) for a first offense. If the person has a prior conviction under the earlier part of the law that is final, the punishments are tripled (three times the prison term and three times the supervised‑release term allowed under 21 U.S.C. 841(b) for a first offense).
