You cannot use a person’s politics or party to pick or hire someone to serve at an overseas post. You also cannot use politics when promoting or making any other job decisions about volunteers or staff sent abroad.

In carrying out this chapter, no political test or political qualification may be used in— (1)
(2)promoting or taking any other action with respect to any volunteer or any person assigned to such a duty station.
