The President picks a pay rate for each chief of mission from the yearly Executive Schedule rates for levels II through V (5 U.S.C. 5313–5316). Their total pay, not counting danger pay, cannot exceed the limit in 5 U.S.C. 5307 or the limit in 22 U.S.C. 3962(a)(3), whichever is higher. (Section 3942(b) may provide an exception.) Pay begins on the effective date of appointment. A chief’s official service does not end when a successor is named. The Secretary of State can keep the chief on duty for up to 50 days after they give up charge of the mission. During that time the Secretary may assign needed duties.
