When a person finishes an assignment they got from the President under section 3942(b), the person must be put back into a job within 90 days after the assignment ends and any allowed leave. If the Secretary of State decides reassignment would not be good for the Foreign Service, the person must be retired and given retirement benefits under section 4046 or 4071d. If the person was already eligible for retirement and is not reassigned within 90 days, they must be retired and receive benefits under section 4046 or 4071d. If someone is retired under subsection (a)(2) and later takes a job with the U.S. Government, any future retirement must follow the rules of the retirement system that then applies.
