The Secretary, through the Service, must run a full behavioral health program for members of Indian tribes. It provides prevention education; medical detox, psychiatric hospital care, residential and intensive outpatient treatment; community rehabilitation and aftercare; community education and staff training; special residential programs for high‑risk people (including pregnant and postpartum women and their children); and diagnostic services. The Secretary can contract with public or private providers to deliver services and must help tribes set certification rules for providers and accreditation standards for facilities.
