Title 25 › Chapter 5— PROTECTION OF INDIANS › § 199a
Ownership of Indian tribe records that the Secretary of the Interior placed with the Oklahoma Historical Society stays with the United States. The Society must keep those records under rules set by the Archivist of the United States. If the Society’s secretary or chief clerk (or their acting officers) makes a certified copy under the Society’s seal, that copy counts the same as the original and is treated as if made by the Archivist under section 2116(b) of title 44. Those certified copies must be given free to the federal government when needed. The records must be returned promptly to the government official the Archivist names if requested.
