Title 25 › Chapter 7— EDUCATION OF INDIANS › § 293b
The Secretary of the Interior must transfer U.S. land and buildings in Alaska to local town, city, or school officials when he finds the Alaska Native Service no longer needs them for schools. The transfer must honor any existing rights or claims. The U.S. keeps the mineral rights and can explore and remove minerals under rules the Secretary sets. The land must be used only for schools or other public purposes. School facilities must serve Native children from the area on the same terms as other children. If the new owner breaks these rules for at least one year, the Secretary can cancel the transfer. His decision is final and the property returns to the U.S. as public land.
