§4222 Block Grants for Affordable Housing Activities

Summary

Each year, if money is available, the Secretary must give a grant to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to help build or support affordable housing for Native Hawaiian families who can live on the Hawaiian Home Lands. The Department can get the grant only if its Director sends a housing plan and the Secretary finds the plan follows the law’s rules. The Secretary may partly waive those plan rules if the Department could not meet them because of circumstances beyond its control. Grant money must be used only for housing activities that match an approved plan. The Secretary must set rules letting the Department use part of each grant for reasonable administrative and planning costs, such as staff pay and plan preparation. The Director must also try to involve private groups and businesses as much as possible in carrying out the approved plan.
