Title 26 › Subtitle Subtitle E— Alcohol, Tobacco, and Certain Other Excise Taxes › Chapter 53— MACHINE GUNS, DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES, AND CERTAIN OTHER FIREARMS › Subchapter B— General Provisions and Exemptions › Part I— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 5841
The federal government keeps a central registry of all regulated firearms not held by the United States, called the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. Each entry identifies the firearm, the registration date, and the name and address of the person entitled to possess it. Manufacturers, importers, and makers must register every firearm they produce or bring in, and every transfer must be registered to the new owner. A manufacturer registers by notifying the government; importers, makers, and transferors must get authorization before acting, which counts as registration. People listed in the older firearms records kept before the National Firearms Act of 1968 took effect are treated as registered. If you possess a registered firearm, you must keep proof of registration and show it on request.
