Title 28 › Part V— PROCEDURE › Chapter 117— EVIDENCE; DEPOSITIONS › § 1784
A U.S. court that issued a subpoena served in another country can require someone who failed to appear or to hand over requested documents to come and explain why they shouldn't be punished. The court can seize that person's property in the United States unless the person posts security set by the court (the United States need not). The order must be served under section 1783(b). If found in contempt, the court may fine up to $100,000 and sell seized property to pay the fine and costs.
