Title 29 › Chapter 31— ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES › § 3006
The Secretary may give competitive grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements to public or private nonprofit groups to run projects that expand access to assistive technology and help people with disabilities fully take part in education, work, community life, and recreation. A “project of national significance” is a project that increases access to assistive tech and creates those participation opportunities. Such projects can include things like partnerships with State Medicaid programs to reuse medical equipment, work with Money Follows the Person states and area agencies on aging, help youth move from school to adult life (jobs, college, and changing devices as they grow), support aging people and caregivers, boost early intervention for infants and toddlers, and raise awareness of financial help and other federal assistive-technology programs. Applicants must apply to the Secretary with a project description. The Secretary may favor one or more types of projects. Grants may only be made if funds are available under section 3008(c) for the year and if at least $49,000,000 is provided under section 3008 to carry out sections 3003, 3004, and 3005.
