Title 33 › Chapter 48— OCEAN AND COASTAL MAPPING INTEGRATION › § 3503
Within 18 months after the National Ocean Exploration Act is enacted, and every two years after that until 2040, the co-chairs of the Working Group must send a report. They must work with the National Ocean Mapping, Exploration, and Characterization Council (created under section 5405 of that Act). The report goes to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate, and to the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology of the House of Representatives. The report must say what has been done to carry out the chapter and cover 16 topics. It must include an inventory of ocean and coastal mapping data (with age, source, and resolution), the top areas needing new surveys, a plan and timetable to map U.S. coasts, the status of digital maps and mapping products for the public and regulators, standards for data and metadata, federal coordination and resource needs, the status of declassifying Navy and intelligence data when safe, coordination with other governments and programs, plans for contracting with nongovernmental groups, any new federal mapping programs, progress on research and new technologies, best practices for processing and sharing data, and training or technology needs to meet the plan.
