The Chief of Engineers must have the Coastal Engineering Research Center study how to stop shore erosion from waves and currents and find the best ways to protect, restore, and develop beaches. The Center must also publish useful information for the public and do this in addition to work with state agencies under section 426. Work under sections 426a to 426d must be paid entirely by the United States. "Shores" means the shorelines of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, and the estuaries and bays directly connected to them.
