Title 33 › Chapter 11— BRIDGES OVER NAVIGABLE WATERS › Subchapter I— GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 500
When told that a bridge pier or abutment in United States navigable waters has changed the current and caused bank collapse, erosion, or other serious danger to property, the Secretary of the Army must investigate. If the claim is true, he must order the owner or operator to fix or stop the harm in the way and time he specifies; if they fail, they can be sued and must pay double the damages. Claims that existed before August 11, 1888 are not affected.
