The Secretary of Defense may give extra pay, up to $3,000 a year, to people who are in the Senior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) or the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class and who take an approved language immersion program, study abroad, or a college class in a foreign language the Defense Department calls strategically important. The extra pay covers the time the person is in the approved language study. If the person does not finish the language program or does not complete ROTC or the Platoon Leaders Class, they must repay the money under the rules in section 303a(e). The Secretary of Defense will make the detailed rules, and no payments can be made after December 31, 2018.
