Title 37 › Chapter 5— SPECIAL AND INCENTIVE PAYS › Subchapter II— CONSOLIDATION OF SPECIAL PAY, INCENTIVE PAY, AND BONUS AUTHORITIES › § 332
The Secretary in charge can pay a bonus to a person, including an officer, for certain moves or commitments. That covers six types of actions: taking an officer appointment, joining a reserve, agreeing to stay on active duty for a set time, transferring between regular and reserve parts of the same service, transferring between different services, and transfers to or from the Space Force. To get a bonus, the person must sign a written deal that says the bonus amount, how it will be paid (one lump sum or in installments), the required time of service, and any service conditions. The law sets top limits: up to $60,000 for accepting an officer job with at least three years of service, up to $20,000 for joining a reserve with at least three years, up to $50,000 per year for agreed regular or sustained Space Force duty, up to $12,000 per year for agreed reserve or non‑sustained Space Force active status, and up to $10,000 for transfers. The bonus is extra pay. If someone does not finish the agreed service or meet the conditions, they must repay under section 373. No new agreements can be made after December 31, 2026.
