Summary

The Secretary must give family and caregivers consultation, counseling (including marriage and family counseling), training, and other mental health services when a veteran is getting treatment for a service‑connected disability under paragraph (1) or (2) of section 1710(a). The Secretary may offer the same help for veterans treated for non‑service‑connected disabilities under paragraphs (1), (2), or (3) of section 1710(a). People who can get these services are immediate family or a legal guardian; a family caregiver or caregiver as defined in section 1720G; or someone in whose household the veteran plans to live. Under section 111, travel and incidental costs for those people can be paid when the veteran has service‑connected care or when a dependent or survivor gets care under the last sentence of section 1783(b).
