Anyone guilty of mutiny, treason, spying, desertion, or who refuses to serve or to wear the uniform for conscience reasons loses all rights to National Service Life Insurance. No death benefit is paid when death is a lawful punishment for a crime or military/naval offense, unless an enemy caused it. Any cash surrender value at death goes to the named beneficiary if alive, otherwise per section 1916(b).
