The Secretary must take steps needed to try to collect repayment on any government‑guaranteed loan that is in default. If a guaranteed loan is ended under state law and the lender holds a public sale, the lender may file a claim under the guarantee for no more than the smaller of the guarantee limit or the unpaid balance (including interest and allowed costs through the date of that sale) minus what was recovered at the sale.
