Title 38 › Part II— GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter 24— NATIONAL CEMETERIES AND MEMORIALS › § 2414
The Secretary must get two things from whoever handled a deceased veteran’s body (for example, the medical examiner, funeral director, or county service group) before the body is sent to a national cemetery: whether the veteran was cremated and what steps were taken to confirm no next of kin. This applies when the Secretary finds there is no next of kin and the veteran does not have enough money to provide a casket or urn.
