Title 38 › Part V— BOARDS, ADMINISTRATIONS, AND SERVICES › Chapter 76— HEALTH PROFESSIONALS EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM › Subchapter VIII— SPECIALTY EDUCATION LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM › § 7693
Allows certain doctors and doctors-in-training to join the Specialty Education Loan Repayment Program if they will be eligible for appointment to work in a medical specialty listed in the law, owe any principal or interest on a loan used to pay for the degree that qualified them for that job, and are either a recent graduate who has matched to an accredited residency in a listed specialty or a physician in training in a listed specialty with more than 2 years of training left. When picking people, the program can give priority to those in residencies that are in rural areas, run by Indian tribes or the Indian Health Service, or linked to underserved Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, and to veterans. The program covers tuition, other reasonable school costs (like fees, books, equipment, and lab charges), and reasonable living expenses.
