Title 4 › CHAPTER 1 — THE FLAG › § 8
Treat the U.S. flag with respect. Do not dip it to any person or thing. Regimental, State, and organization flags may be dipped as a sign of honor. Never display the blue star field (the union) downward except to signal extreme danger to life or property. Do not let the flag touch the ground, floor, water, or merchandise. Keep the flag held up and free, not flat or horizontal, except when needed in a limited, respectful military or patriotic observance. Do not use the flag as clothing, bedding, drapery, a ceiling cover, a container, or for advertising. Do not put marks, pictures, words, or signs on the flag. Store and display it so it will not be torn, dirty, or damaged. For decoration use bunting with blue above, white in the middle, and red below. Do not make costumes or sports uniforms from the flag, but a small flag patch is allowed on uniforms of military, fire, police, and patriotic groups. A lapel flag pin may be worn on the left lapel near the heart. When the flag is too worn to display, destroy it in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
