Defines key words used in this part. Demand responsive system: public transit that does not run on a fixed route. Designated public transportation: regular bus, rail, or other vehicle service for the public (not aircraft or intercity or commuter rail as defined in section 12161 of this title), excluding public school transportation and including charter service. Fixed route system: service on set routes and schedules. Operates: includes running the service under contract with a public entity. Public school transportation: schoolbus trips carrying students, personnel, and equipment to and from public elementary or secondary schools. Secretary: the Secretary of Transportation.
