Defines key words used in this chapter. Economic loss means money lost from harm that can be recovered under state law, like lost wages, medical bills, replacement services, funeral costs, and lost business or job opportunities. Harm covers physical, nonphysical, economic, and noneconomic loss. Noneconomic losses are non-money harms such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, physical impairment or disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life or companionship, and harm to reputation. Nonprofit organization means a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt group or a similar not-for-profit run for public benefit (charitable, civic, educational, religious, welfare, or health) that does not commit the hate crimes named in the Hate Crime Statistics Act. State means the U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, other U.S. territories or possessions, and their political subdivisions. Volunteer means someone who serves a nonprofit or government and gets no pay except reasonable reimbursement for actual expenses and no other thing of value.
