Title 42 › Chapter 149— NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY AND PROGRAMS › Subchapter XII— ELECTRICITY › Part A— Transmission Infrastructure Modernization › § 16422
The Commission must encourage use of advanced transmission technologies when it carries out the Federal Power Act and the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978. It should do this when it is appropriate. Advanced transmission technology means any technology that makes a transmission line or facility hold more power, work more efficiently, or run more reliably. The law covers 19 kinds of technologies, including high-temperature or superconducting lines, underground cables, advanced conductors and ceramic parts, optimized line designs, modular gear, wireless power, ultra-high voltage and high-voltage DC, flexible AC systems, energy storage (like pumped hydro, compressed air, superconducting storage, flywheels, and batteries), controllable load, distributed generation (such as solar PV, fuel cells, and microturbines), improved monitoring and sensors, fiber optics, power electronics and software, mobile transformers and substations, and other technologies the Commission finds appropriate.
