Title 42 › Chapter 152— ENERGY INDEPENDENCE AND SECURITY › Subchapter IX— SMART GRID › § 17389
The Secretary must create a grant program to pay for projects that modernize the electric distribution grid. Projects should use technology to make the grid easier to monitor, add advanced control tools, and help predict how the system will perform. To get a grant, a project must aim to make the future grid work better and more efficiently while keeping power safe, secure, reliable, and affordable. It must show it can securely integrate and manage two or more energy resources (for example distributed generation, combined heat and power, microgrids, energy storage, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, demand response, or intelligent loads) and securely connect communications and information technology so they work together.
