§1862p–6 Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Summary

The Director must give competitively reviewed grants to colleges, nonprofits, or groups of them for sites the Director picks to run undergraduate STEM research programs. Those sites must serve at least 6 students if they are mainly undergraduate colleges and at least 10 students at other sites. Grants should work to increase participation by the groups named in sections 1885a and 1885b. At least half the students at each site must come from schools with limited research chances, including 2-year colleges. Grants must cover many STEM fields, support different project styles (including multi-school and virtual), provide mentors (including during the school year), pay appropriate stipends or salaries for mentors and students, and track students through getting their bachelor’s degree and for at least 3 years after. If a grant will include one or more students in certificate, associate, or bachelor’s programs, the applicant must request funding for those students (including stipends) in the main research proposal, not as a later supplement, unless student involvement was not foreseeable when the proposal was first made.
