Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER II — GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES › Part F — Licensing of Biological Products and Clinical Laboratories › subpart 2 — clinical laboratories › § 263a–3
Within 2 years after October 24, 1992, the Secretary, through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), must set rules and a process to approve accreditation organizations that inspect and certify embryo laboratories. Those organizations must apply for approval. Once approved, a group can be used by States that have a lab certification program, or it can certify labs in States that do not have such a program. The rules must include requirements for keeping records and reports and for how inspections are carried out. The Secretary must check each approved accrediting group every year. The check will include inspecting enough labs they accredited to judge how well the group is doing and other methods the Secretary chooses. If approval is revoked after a review, labs the group accredited keep their certification for 60 days after being told, and the Secretary can extend that time if a lab quickly applies to another approved group.
