Title 42 › Chapter 6A— PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter II— GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES › Part G— Quarantine and Inspection › § 271
Breaking federal quarantine rules can get a person fined up to $1,000, jailed for up to one year, or both. This includes ignoring quarantine rules or entering or leaving quarantine areas without the officer in charge's permission. A ship that breaks these rules can be made to pay up to $5,000. A court decides the exact amount and can place a legal claim on the vessel to collect it. The U.S. attorney brings the case and the same court rules used for seizing ships in federal revenue cases apply. With the Secretary’s approval, the Surgeon General can reduce or cancel a ship’s penalty and look into requests to do so.
