Title 42 › CHAPTER 6A — PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › SUBCHAPTER III — NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part A — National Institutes of Health › § 283a–3
The Director of NIH must create a program to support research, training, public information, and other activities about diagnosing and treating health problems linked to the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES). After talking with nonprofit groups that represent people exposed to DES, the Director must fund or run education for doctors and the public about the drug and about finding and treating exposed people. After consulting the Office of Research on Women’s Health, the Director must fund one or more long-term studies to see how often diseases occur and how DES is related to them in four groups: women given DES while pregnant, women exposed before birth, men and women exposed before birth, and the children of people exposed before birth. These studies must cover cancers (including clear cell cancer and recurrences), reproductive and immune system problems, and other diseases. "Exposed in utero" means DES was given to the biological mother during the pregnancy that produced the child on or after January 1, 1938.
