The Institute Director can increase and organize research on congenital heart disease (heart problems present at birth). That research can look at causes (including genes), long-term results at all ages, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, studies using long-term or past data to find what works, and finding problems that stop people from getting care for life. The Director can also coordinate work among different research centers and build research networks. In doing this work, the Director must consider how it applies to minority and medically underserved communities.
